Experience

20 years

  • Member of the QUICK building thermal performance simulation software development team, responsible for modelling of building natural ventilation.

  • Leader of the design team that won the coveted ESKOM eta‑award in 2002 for the best energy efficient design in the South African commercial sector, based on locally developed heat pump system technology.

  • Leader of the team that successfully commercialised novel water-heating concepts that offers unique advantages with regard to energy efficiency and demand side management in large industrial residences.

  • Developed the WHSIM software tool for the integrated simulation and performance prediction of water heating systems with regard to energy efficiency and demand side management.

  • Pioneered the development of PumpShed, a unique pump scheduling software tool that is used to optimize the operation of large pump stations in deep mines.
Designed and developed purpose-built environmental control unit for underground mine rescue chambers.

  • Designed and implemented various water heating heat pump systems for large commercial residences aimed at energy efficiency and demand side management improvements.
Principle technical consultant for the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) since 1999.
Executive member of the design team that in 2002, in record time, developed the world’s first operating prototype of a three-shaft, closed-loop, recuperated gas turbine power plant.

  • Lead engineer for the design of the High Pressure Test Unit (HPTU) and High Temperature Test Unit (HTTU) of the Heat Transfer Test Facility (HTTF) that forms part of PBMR’s thermal-fluid phenomena test plan.

  • Member of the Flownexä systems CFD simulation software development team, which has sold licenses in the USA, Europe and Japan.

Presented Flownexä training courses in different countries around the world.
Developed and annually presents short course in ‘Practical thermal‑fluid system simulation’ for industry.

  • Served as Lecturer and Associate Professor in the faculty of engineering at the University of Pretoria.

  • Served as Professor and Director of the School of Mechanical Engineering as well as Director of Energy Systems Research in the faculty of engineering at North‑West University.
Published more than 70 papers in international journals and conference proceedings, co-authored a chapter in a textbook on heat pump design and optimisation and has served as study leader for more than 30 post-graduate students.

  • Received the student council award for best lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering at North‑West University.

  • Served on the editorial boards of the ‘South African R&D Journal’ as well as the international journals ‘Building and Environment’ and ‘Nuclear Engineering and Design’.
